Reading Habits: The YAL study of 7 A lot of people are wary of the fact that reading is extremely beneficial and vital to the development of oneself. However, being cognizant of this fact does not mean that everyone abides to this declaration. Sure, reading happens daily and more often than not, we do it without it being so obvious. For example, when someone is driving, that person has to be alert of their surroundings which includes the signs on the roads that tell one where to exit, where not to turn, where it is okay to park and where to stop. With teenagers, the oblivious reading happens mostly with social media and modern day technology. The point is, the act of reading is a constant ritual whether one is mindful of it or not. In†¦show more content†¦Rasco, President and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. wrote an article on the importance of having access to books in order to end illiteracy. She says, â€Å"Research has shown that increasing access to books and giving children the choice to choose wha t they want to read improves academic performance and attitudes toward reading and learning (Rasco).† Considering this, I wondered if interests in particular genres or style of book (picture or chapter) played a role in a student’s liking or motivation towards literacy as a whole. In the survey, I asked a true or false question in response to the statement, â€Å"I have access to books†. I believe it is important for a child to not only have access, but be mindful of that same access as well. Another note-worthy thing that Carol Rasco says is that â€Å"By making books available to those from low-income communities before achievement gaps emerge, we have the opportunity to level the playing field (Rasco).† In my past experiences, the students who have trouble reading are many times despiteful of literacy because it is too challenging and they give up. When one takes a look at the achievement gap, kids who come from disadvantaged families or communities are often times behind academically from their peers who may have or know of more available resources than their counterparts. The prospect of human cloning was introduced in February 1997 when an embryologist was able to produce a lamb through the process of cloning. Once the lamb was cloned, the question of whether research for human cloning came into being. Society and researchers have feuded over whether human cloning should be banned or allowed for research and reproduction purposes. Each side has reasonable ideologies to continue their stance towards the opposing argument. Pro- cloners believe that the research developed from human cloning will benefit society, while those who oppose it believe there are numerous risks in allowing the research. A decision will be reached when both sides compromise and reach an agreement. In the novel Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning, written by a committee of scientist and engineers, state that society will be the overall decision maker for human cloning (2003, p. xi). Many individuals in society currently do not approve of the human cloning research process. Some are concerned that the cloned child would have issues with its self identity. and some believe that cloning a human is overall morally wrong. The prospect of social identity problems arises from what Nestor Morales, a Professor of Psychology at New York, cites that cloned children, â€Å"knowing that they have been a planned to be a copy from another problem, †¦ , may diminish their sense on uniqueness† (Morales, 2009, p. 44). Everyone Has a Story Every Sunday morning, since I can remember, we got up around 7 a. M. And drove 25 minutes into downtown Cincinnati for church service. It was a cold early Sunday morning in autumn of 2010 when I first saw a man, who I would later get to know, named Kevin Moyer. Church was Just about to begin, so needless to say my dad was in a hurry to get inside and find a seat. As I scattered to get out of the car and fix my messy hair, I saw out of the corner of my eye a man lying down on the corner of the hurt. As any typical naive teenager, I automatically assume that this man is homeless and is probably an addict of some kind. As we crossed the street to reach the church doors, my dad caught me staring at this man and gave me a stern nudge which meant to stop staring. The more I thought about it, the more I felt sorry for this man. I needed to find Steven, my youth pastor who also normally came to breakfast, to tell IM about this man. Kevin began to share his story with Steven and I and he told us that he had been enlisted in the Marines but after he served four years he came back and couldnt find a Job and had to stay with his mom.
